Xi'an, formerly known as Chang'an and Haojing, is a prefecture level city under the jurisdiction of Shaanxi Province. It is the capital, sub provincial city, and mega city of Shaanxi Province. It is located in the central part of the Guanzhong Plain in northwest China, bordering the Wei River to the north and the Qinling Mountains to the south. It is the core city of the Xi'an metropolitan area and the Guanzhong Plain urban agglomeration. Xi'an is a "World Historical City" designated by UNESCO in 1981. It is one of the important birthplaces of Chinese civilization and the Chinese nation, the starting point of the Silk Road, and is a world-renowned historical city. It is on par with world-famous ancient cities such as Rome, Athens, and Cairo, and is the longest established capital among the six ancient capitals of China.
